Bitcoin slips after weekend fails to break above $81,400

Bitcoin was last around $79,300, while select altcoins that surged on the weekend largely cooled after midnight UTC.

CoinDesk reports bitcoin traded near $79,300 on Monday, down about 1.3% since midnight UTC, after failing to push through a weekend ceiling near $81,400.

CoinDesk also said U.S. markets diverged over the same window, with Nasdaq 100 futures up 0.3% since midnight UTC during the U.S. Labor Day holiday, extending a split between crypto and equities seen last week.

On the altcoin side, CoinDesk noted weekend gains stalled after midnight, with Bittensor, kaspa, internet computer and celestia each up more than 12% over 24 hours mostly before midnight.

CoinDesk added that some coins gave back gains unevenly, including TAO up 0.4% since midnight UTC, chainlink up about 1%, and NEAR Protocol down about 1.5%, while dash fell 5.3% and Arbitrum shed double digits after nearly doubling on the week.
