India boosts rail coal deliveries as power plant stocks hit lows
More than 50 coal-fired plants had coal stocks below 25% by early September, and the number of critically low sites rose to 53 as of September 5.
OilPrice reports that India has increased coal shipments by rail to coal-fired power plants after inventories at dozens of facilities fell to critically low levels, according to the country’s Ministry of Coal.
The Ministry of Coal said that more than 50 power plants saw coal stocks drop below the critically low threshold of 25% as electricity demand rose amid strong El Niño conditions, while monsoon rains disrupted supply.
Data cited from India’s Central Electricity Authority showed the number of plants with critically low coal stocks climbed to 53 as of September 5, up from 45 on August 26.
The ministry said coal shipments via rail have increased in recent days and pointed to sustained efforts by Coal India Limited, its subsidiaries, SCCL and captive mine operators to ramp up coal supply, while noting that critical plants are being monitored and corrective supply measures are in place.
