National Sheriffs’ Association drops opposition to Clarity Act

The group shifted from opposing to neutral, citing the bill’s complexity as the Senate vote is set to move forward this month.

The National Sheriffs’ Association has dropped its opposition to the proposed crypto Clarity Act, changing its stance to neutral after previously warning the bill could help criminals, according to Bitcoin Magazine.

In a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, the association said it was stepping back because the legislation is complex and several key details remain under consideration.

Lawmakers had sought to vote on the Clarity Act in August, but after delays, the vote will proceed this month. The bill is designed to create a framework for classifying digital assets as securities, commodities, or payment stablecoins.

Bitcoin Magazine also reports that the Clarity Act passed in the House last year with bipartisan support, but it has been stuck in a deadlock for much of 2026. The story notes that banking industry groups raised concerns about stablecoin yield, some lawmakers wanted changes related to ethics, and an updated version introduced in July includes a ban on government officials and their families from issuing or promoting crypto.
