Sweden to buy US-made HIMARS rocket artillery in 730 million deal

The purchase includes about 10 launchers on trucks, with first deliveries expected in 2027.

Sweden plans to spend seven billion kronor, about US$730 million, to buy US-made Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System, or HIMARS, rocket artillery for its military, according to the Swedish government as covered by SCMP Economy.

The government said the acquisition would let the Swedish Armed Forces operate over larger areas and add greater long-range capacity than current systems, and it cited the need for rapidly available capabilities to complement conventional artillery.

Defence Minister Pal Jonson told reporters that the deal covers about 10 trucks equipped with launchers and a large quantity of ammunition, the report said.

First deliveries of the HIMARS artillery systems made by Lockheed Martin are set for 2027, and Sweden also announced a joint declaration with Finland to deepen cooperation on rocket artillery systems, SCMP Economy reported.
