US envoys Witkoff and Kushner travel from Moscow to Kyiv on peace push
The weekend marked the first time Witkoff and Kushner visited Kyiv together after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow the day before, with Ukraine signaling readiness for trilateral talks.
The Trump administration has restarted diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war in Ukraine, with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner traveling from Moscow to Kyiv to help lay groundwork for another round of negotiations, according to OilPrice.
OilPrice reports the pair met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow before traveling to Kyiv, where they held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the first time together. Witkoff characterized the discussions in both capitals as constructive and said Washington received “new ideas” from Moscow, while Kushner said the United States is working on a broader “peace package.”
Zelenskyy told the envoys his discussions were “very substantial” and that Ukraine is prepared to move toward trilateral talks involving Kyiv, Washington, and Moscow. National security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany also joined part of the Kyiv discussions, as reported by OilPrice.
Despite the heightened activity, three former US ambassadors interviewed by RFE/RL on September 6 warned that movement in diplomacy should not be mistaken for progress, OilPrice said. William B. Taylor Jr., who served twice as US ambassador to Ukraine, cautioned that the key test is elsewhere rather than in Kyiv or Washington.
