Xi launches diplomatic blitz ahead of summit with Trump
Observers say the sequencing is meant to bolster China’s negotiating position with the United States ahead of the summit.
China’s President Xi Jinping has embarked on an intensive sequence of overseas diplomacy in the run up to a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, with the SCMP Economy noting that the Trump meeting is just over two weeks away.
The outlet says Xi most recently wrapped up the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and then made a state visit to Egypt. It also reports Xi is expected to travel later this week to visit New Delhi for the BRICS summit.
Observers cited by SCMP Economy said the diplomatic push is aimed not only at making progress on bilateral ties, but also at improving China’s leverage in negotiations with the United States.
SCMP Economy added that the diplomatic sequencing highlights China’s foreign relations are not centered on Washington alone.
