AI speeds up commodity supply chain information gathering
Industry attendees at a Kansas City seminar cited pilot-stage AI use, with 48% experimenting and 18% deploying it in real workflows.
Artificial intelligence is being used to quickly collect information from commodity reports, production lines, and customer orders, helping buyers and purchasers free up time for decisions, according to World Grain. Erin Nazetta, an executive adviser for agriculture, commodities and global risk, said more advanced AI programs may also offer recommendations, but successful rollout depends on using the right program or programs, having correct data, and maintaining human oversight. Nazetta made the remarks at the Sosland Purchasing Seminar in Kansas City in June, where she electronically polled more than 100 attendees on AI adoption. World Grain reports that 48% said their companies were experimenting with AI through pilots without a commitment, 24% were not using AI yet, 18% had deployed it in real workflows, and 10% had embedded it in daily work. World Grain also cited research from Aptean, a supplier of industry-specific software, saying 23% of food and beverage organizations consider AI essential to their workflows and decision-making. Katherine Parr of Aptean said daily commodity reporting is moving from manual, once-a-week pulls to routines that organizations expect AI to support, including helping teams anticipate impacts like ingredient lot characteristics and price swings before they affect production schedules.
