Canada to impose retaliatory tariffs on hundreds of US products

The tariffs include raising import duties on many US steel items to 50% from 25% and expanding coverage to consumer goods like motorcycles, cosmetics, and cheese.

Canada is set to impose retaliatory tariffs on hundreds of US products on Tuesday, according to SCMP Economy, as Prime Minister Mark Carney seeks to strengthen Ottawa’s negotiating position with its largest trading partner.

The planned measures would raise import taxes on many US steel items to 50% from 25% and apply tariffs across a range of consumer categories, including motorcycles, cosmetics, and cheese.

SCMP Economy reports the new duties are expected to hit US exporters particularly hard in states such as Michigan and Ohio, where significant trade ties with Canada intersect with November midterm election politics.

The outlet also notes that US administration officials have said they will not tolerate retaliation, while Canadian officials frame the step as making the trade war’s costs tangible for American businesses and consumers, with Brian Clow describing the goal as creating incentive for Washington to return to negotiations.
