Ethereum Foundation targets quantum-resistant upgrades by December 2029
The Ethereum Foundation says the 2027 Hegotá upgrade is meant to keep later post-quantum hard forks and cryptographic changes on schedule, with outside reassessments planned for January 2027.
The Ethereum Foundation has set a December 2029 deadline to make Ethereum resistant to quantum-computing attacks that could undermine today’s cryptography, covering transactions, validator operations, and data storage.
In the foundation’s plan, the 2027 Hegotá upgrade is not described as quantum resistance itself. Instead, it is intended to keep five subsequent hard forks and related cryptographic changes on track, which the foundation links to the timing of post-quantum deployments.
The Foundation says it is aiming earlier than some forecasts, noting that multiple credible outlooks place a breaking quantum machine as early as 2030, while some researchers believe it may never arrive. It also says there is no immediate threat because existing quantum machines are not powerful enough.
The plan also outlines protections such as new account and validator signature systems, a public-key registry, and a fallback approach designed to keep Ethereum operating with reduced guarantees if quantum advances sooner than expected, per CoinDesk.
