Ethereum sets December 2029 target for quantum-resistant upgrades
Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol cluster said additional consensus-layer work is close to zero unless it supports the post-quantum roadmap, narrowing what can fit into upcoming upgrades.
Ethereum is beginning to limit which features can be added to future upgrades as developers work toward making the network quantum-resistant by December 2029, according to the Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol cluster.
On Sept. 7, the Foundation said the December 2029 deadline will remain non-negotiable at least until a review with outside experts in January, creating tighter competition between “optional” upgrade elements and the engineering needed to harden Ethereum’s execution, consensus, and data layers.
The trade-off is already showing in Hegotá, scoped after Glamsterdam. Its protected headliners include FOCIL, designed to strengthen transaction inclusion guarantees, and Frame Transactions, which introduces a new account transaction model and a path toward replacing cryptography vulnerable to future quantum attacks.
Developers are also considering shifting parts of the post-quantum timeline, such as moving post-quantum attestations forward from the L* upgrade to K* and pushing mandatory execution proofs from K* to L*, though the swap has not been approved. The Foundation said it is planning around Q-day, the point when quantum computers could break widely used public-key cryptography, which could occur as early as 2030, and expects full post-quantum readiness about five hard forks after Glamsterdam reaches mainnet in December 2026.
