India adds 180,000 tonnes of grain storage under decentralized plan
The government says pilot work in 11 cooperative societies added 9,750 tonnes of capacity, as part of a $15 billion effort to expand storage nationwide.
India has added more than 180,000 tonnes of grain storage during the expansion phase of its Decentralised Grain Storage Plan in the cooperative sector, the government said, as it scales a broader push to build thousands of warehouses and bins.
The plan, launched in 2023 and supported by government financing initiatives, targets adding 70 million tonnes of grain storage capacity over the next five years, with a stated aim of storing 100% of the country’s grain production.
Officials said the program is meant to cut the share of grain that is inadequately stored, reduce reliance on long-distance transportation, lower transportation costs, and improve supply chain efficiency, while also emphasizing quality standards, transparency, and operational viability.
The government also cited progress through phased implementation, including warehouse construction completed in 11 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies across 11 states, creating 9,750 tonnes of capacity, and said that as of July construction was completed in 313 PACS, adding more than 180,000 tonnes.
