Liquid white hats return most of withdrawn Bitcoin after patching

The actors returned 3,400 BTC, worth about $270 million, leaving about 598 BTC still outstanding as Liquid remains paused ahead of a coordinated restart.

According to Cointelegraph, actors who described themselves as white hats have returned most of the Bitcoin they withdrew from Liquid’s federation wallet after a security incident ahead of the network restart.

The return totals 3,400 BTC, worth about $270 million, after roughly $320 million was taken from the Bitcoin sidechain reserves. Cointelegraph reports that 85% of the withdrawn funds were restored, with about 598 BTC still outstanding.

Cointelegraph adds that JAN3 CEO and former Blockstream executive Samson Mow said Blockstream confirmed the affected bridge nodes had been patched. Blockstream also said updated software was deployed and federation members were preparing for a coordinated restart.

The incident followed Sunday activity in which hackers withdrew about 4,000 BTC from a wallet that held roughly 4,200 BTC, triggering a pause and issues for Liquid’s L-BTC backing. Cointelegraph reports that Mow told users not to send Bitcoin to Liquid peg-in addresses until the restart is confirmed, while noting no other user action was required.
