South Korea sends fact-finding team to assess Strait of Hormuz conditions
Shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has been virtually paralyzed since the US-Iran war began on February 28, disrupting global energy markets.
South Korea has dispatched a fact-finding team to assess conditions in the Strait of Hormuz, the South Korean defense ministry said, adding that the mission does not presume any troop deployment. According to SCMP Economy, the team will examine regional security conditions and the situation on the ground.
The development comes as traffic through the strategic waterway has been virtually paralyzed since the US-Iran war began on February 28, with disruptions spilling into global energy markets, SCMP Economy reported. The ministry also stressed that no decision has been made on deploying troops.
SCMP Economy said South Korea has denied that Washington asked it to send troops by a specified deadline, even as US President Donald Trump has repeatedly pressured Seoul to help in the Middle East conflict.
