South Korean groups urge UNESCO to list comfort women documents

The groups want UNESCO to move forward with adding wartime “comfort women” documents to its Memory of the World Register, extending a campaign that began over a decade ago.

South Korean citizens’ groups have called on UNESCO to proceed with listing documents related to wartime “comfort women” on the organization’s Memory of the World Register, according to SCMP Economy.

The request was made in Seoul at a press conference and seeks UN recognition of materials tied to testimony and other paperwork about sexual slavery imposed by Japanese troops during World War Two, the outlet said.

SCMP Economy also reports that the campaign has been ongoing for more than a decade, noting that groups from eight countries first asked UNESCO to collate and preserve victims’ accounts.

Analysts cited by the outlet said the continuing dispute between Seoul and Tokyo could disrupt recent improvements in relations, even as the two countries face regional and global security and economic challenges.
