Cathay Pacific to start direct flights to Almaty from Hong Kong

The Almaty route will be Cathay Pacific’s first to Central Asia and the only non stop passenger link between Hong Kong and Kazakhstan, starting next January.

Cathay Pacific Airways will launch direct flights to Almaty starting next January, a move that goes beyond adding a destination, according to SCMP Economy. The carrier says the service will be its first route to Central Asia and the only non stop passenger connection between Hong Kong and Kazakhstan.

SCMP Economy also points to a separate logistics expansion involving Qatar Airways Cargo. The airline relocated its regional office to Hong Kong and agreed with the Airport Authority to increase frequencies and develop new routes through the city.

The story notes that Qatar Airways Cargo already operates around 56 cargo flights per week via Hong Kong, positioning the city as a growing hub for both passenger connectivity and cargo capacity.

Taken together, the developments are presented as a sign of how Hong Kong’s aviation network is changing, and as a prompt to assess whether the region’s ideas about what makes a successful airport hub have evolved alongside the new route plans.
