Xi urges deeper China-UK ties in first call with PM Andy Burnham

The read-out from Beijing did not specify whether discussions touched on wars in Iran and Ukraine.

China’s President Xi Jinping called on the United Kingdom to deepen cooperation with China in his first official phone call with new UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, according to Xinhua cited by SCMP Economy.

Xi congratulated Burnham on his appointment and said both sides should respect and trust each other, set aside differences, and expand cooperation, framing China and the UK as major technological powers with shared resources in areas including education, culture and sports.

Xi also urged the UK to work with China as a fellow major economy, backing multilateralism and free trade, and supporting an “equitable and orderly multipolar world,” according to the same read-out from Beijing.

SCMP Economy reported that the evening read-out did not say whether the wars in Iran and Ukraine were part of the talks.
