Hong Kong CEO says Belt and Road Summit deals top $3 billion
John Lee Ka-chiu said more than 60 government and business agreements will be signed, and cited a recent example of Kazakhstan’s railway company seeking to list in the city.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said the city will remain a gateway linking Belt and Road economies with mainland China and global markets, positioning Hong Kong as a “two-way springboard” for firms looking to expand in either direction, according to SCMP Economy.
Speaking at the opening of the annual Belt and Road Summit on Wednesday, Lee said more than 60 government and business agreements and memorandums of understanding are expected to be signed during the event, with the total value of projects and deals exceeding US$3 billion.
Lee framed the summit as a response to geopolitical fragmentation, saying connectivity and cooperation are essential, and described Hong Kong as a place where capital, talent, and businesses converge between East and West.
He also highlighted examples of mainland and international companies using the city for market access, including Kazakhstan’s national railway company applying to list on Hong Kong’s stock exchange, SCMP Economy reported.
