Huawei goes on trial in Brooklyn on 14 criminal counts
Huawei, based in Shenzhen, has pleaded not guilty to all 14 counts, including bank fraud and wire fraud, as prosecutors argue a decades long scheme to expand its worldwide business.
Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies went on trial Tuesday in Brooklyn, New York, on criminal charges following eight years of legal wrangling with the US government, according to SCMP Economy. Huawei has pleaded not guilty to all 14 counts, which include allegations of bank fraud, wire fraud, trade secret theft, and racketeering. Prosecutors say the alleged criminal activity dates back to 1999. Jury selection began Tuesday, with US District Judge Ann M. Donnelly of the Eastern District of New York telling prospective jurors to be fair and impartial. She also cautioned that neither China nor the Communist Party is on trial, and that the ongoing US Iran conflict should not influence jurors’ judgment. Federal prosecutors, in court documents filed with the Eastern District of New York, said Huawei carried out a decades long racketeering scheme to grow its worldwide business. Prosecutors framed the case as a long running effort to expand internationally, rather than a single incident, as the trial process gets underway.
