Iran says it captured a US underwater drone in the Strait of Hormuz
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the drone was an Anduril Dive-LD capable of missions like mine countermeasures and seabed mapping, while the Pentagon said the US underwater drone malfunctioned more than a day earlier.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said it captured an unmanned US underwater vehicle at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, offering a look at how underwater drones are being used in military operations, according to SCMP Economy citing details from Reuters.
Iranian state media said the submersible was a Dive-LD, a large autonomous underwater vehicle built by California defense firm Anduril. The Dive-LD, at 5.8 meters, is described by the company as able to conduct missions including mine countermeasures, seabed mapping, intelligence gathering, and inspecting underwater infrastructure such as cables and pipelines.
The Revolutionary Guards Navy said in a statement carried by Iranian state media that it had trapped a modern unmanned submarine at the strait entrance. In response, a Pentagon spokesperson said an underwater drone had malfunctioned more than a day ago and was surveying regional waters to support ongoing operations.
The spokesperson added that the defective drone was an older model that did not collect sensitive data and carried no classified sonar or radar equipment. Anduril confirmed the loss of one of its vessels and played down the significance of the incident, Reuters reported.
