OpenAI claims AI bots solved a Navier-Stokes proof in 88 hours
OpenAI said its 10,000 AI agents exchanged nearly 3 million messages and used 130 billion output tokens to reach the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness solution.
OpenAI said it used a new internal AI model and about 10,000 semi-autonomous AI bots to solve a decades-old advanced mathematics problem tied to the Navier-Stokes equations in 88 hours, calling the result a milestone for AI progress.
The company said the Navier-Stokes work concerns how fluids move, and that for 90 years key aspects of the problem had lacked a proof. It also said the solution has not yet been independently verified or publicly accepted by the Clay Mathematics Institute, which runs the Millennium Prize.
OpenAI said it began training the new model at the end of August and later escalated efforts after hearing rumors that two Millennium Prize problems had been resolved. It directed thousands of AI bots at remaining problems, then reported that by Sept. 5 it had found a solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem.
In describing the computational effort, OpenAI said the bots exchanged nearly 3 million messages and used 130 billion output tokens on Navier-Stokes alone. The firm estimated a project at that scale would have cost roughly $10 million based on its own pricing for output from its most advanced model, according to BBC Business.
