SatYield builds digital twins to monitor crop prospects via satellites

The Sacramento startup says its biophysical simulation and real-time satellite observation aim to reduce dependence on surveys and other traditional crop analysis methods.

Satellite imagery, artificial intelligence, and advanced modeling are set to reshape how crop conditions and agricultural production are monitored and measured, according to World Grain. The outlet highlights a Sacramento-based startup, SatYield, which is developing a system meant to move away from periodic crop assessments toward continuous observation during the growing season.

SatYield’s approach relies on remote sensing, using publicly available satellite networks and computer vision and machine learning to track crop development across large geographic areas. World Grain says the platform is designed to incorporate imagery as well as weather data, soil information, and agronomic models to estimate acreage, monitor crop health, and assess production potential.

At the core of the company’s method is an agricultural digital twin, a virtual representation of the crop that combines inputs such as satellite images, planting information, soil conditions, and weather forecasts. World Grain reports that the digital twin models can simulate plant development under varying conditions and generate thousands of potential crop outcomes.

World Grain also notes that the technology is intended to translate satellite data, not just identify what is planted, into actionable insights. SatYield CEO and co-founder Gabby Nizri said the company analyzes pixels to create an intelligent layer, converting what observers see from space into crop-related information.
