UK air traffic glitch leads to at least 177 flight cancellations
FlightRadar24 said 1,300 flights to and from UK airports were canceled the day before the disruption, with most of the latest scrapped flights at Heathrow.
Travellers across the UK faced renewed disruption after a technical issue hit the national air traffic system, forcing Britain’s air traffic control service to begin a complex recovery process, according to the SCMP Economy.
Aircraft tracking website FlightRadar24 said more than 150 flights were scrapped on Wednesday, with 177 scheduled flights already canceled for the day. The bulk of the latest affected flights were linked to London’s Heathrow airport.
FlightRadar24 also pointed to the scale of the earlier fallout, saying 1,300 cancellations to and from UK airports occurred a day before the Wednesday cancellations. The National Air Traffic Services (NATS) said it was still working to resolve the disruption following a system issue.
SCMP Economy reports that UK news outlets said British Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander will meet NATS boss Martin Rolfe on Wednesday. NATS said the recovery is difficult for the wider aviation network and will take time.
