US issues new Iran sanctions targeting aviation sector and aircraft supply
The Treasury said it suspended three Iran-linked aviation authorizations covering overflights and permits for non-US airlines flying US-origin or US-controlled aircraft into Iran.
The United States Treasury issued 36 new Iran-related sanctions aimed at Iran’s aviation sector and companies involved in aircraft procurement, as the war in the Middle East entered a seventh month, according to SCMP Economy, citing Reuters.
The action targets Mahan Air, which is already sanctioned by the US and the European Union, as well as all other Iranian airlines, and it also targets covert front companies, foreign intermediaries, and transshipment routes Washington says Iran uses to obtain US-origin aircraft and sensitive technology.
The Treasury also issued a notification urging financial institutions to report procurement networks supporting Iran’s aviation industry, and it designated firms based in Turkey and the United Arab Emirates that it said helped Iran procure US-origin aircraft and sensitive technology.
In addition, the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control suspended three Iran-related aviation authorizations that allowed overflights and permitted non-US airlines to fly US-origin or US-controlled commercial aircraft into Iran.
