US large-scale data centers could triple in number by 2030
The projected build-out includes nearly $7T in data center spending by tech companies, but community opposition and grid timeline uncertainty could derail some projects.
The U.S. is on track for a major expansion in large-scale data centers, with the number of such sites projected to rise by more than 200 percent over the next four years, according to data cited by Bisnow from capital markets analytics outlet The Kobeissi Letter.
The outlet estimates the U.S. currently has about 90 operational data center campuses with at least 100 megawatts of capacity, but the figure could climb to as many as 280 hyperscale facilities by the end of the decade if projects in construction or earlier stages advance.
Bisnow reports that tech companies are expected to spend close to $7T on data centers over the same period, and that Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta have signed more than $1.5T in data center leases since the AI infrastructure boom began nearly three years ago.
The report also flags risk factors, including growing community opposition that has already derailed dozens of projects, along with unclear timelines for grid connections and uncertainty around future AI demand, while referencing PwC projections of up to $6.5T in global data center capex by 2030 and $31.6T through 2050.
