AI researcher quits industry over fears of self-improving superintelligence
Jacob Coxon, 27, said neither OpenAI nor Anthropic is acting responsibly, and he expects some builders believe AI could be fatal by the end of the decade.
An AI researcher who previously left OpenAI to join Anthropic has decided to leave the industry, warning that the US AI race is pushing toward self-improving “superintelligence.” According to Agence France-Presse, Jacob Coxon spent the past three years pretraining AI models, first at OpenAI and then, after switching this year, at Anthropic.
Coxon criticized both companies for what he described as an irresponsible race to build systems he said could surpass human intelligence. He argued that neither firm is acting responsibly, and he said builders earnestly believe AI could kill people all by the end of the decade.
In a social media post reported by the outlet, Coxon said his decision was not a marketing stunt, framing it as a reaction to concerns about the direction and risk of advanced AI development. The story also describes superintelligence as the point where AI capabilities exceed human intelligence.
