Anthropic signs 24K SF Cambridge lease at One Kendall Square

The AI chatbot maker plans to move early next year into two floors at Alexandria’s 667K SF office and lab building, expanding its Cambridge footprint beyond its current WeWork base.

Anthropic, the company behind AI chatbot Claude, is expanding its Greater Boston presence with a new office lease in Cambridge, the Boston Globe reports via Bisnow. The San Francisco-based firm signed a 24K SF lease at Alexandria Real Estate Equities’ One Kendall Square.

Anthropic plans to relocate early next year into two floors of the 667K SF office and lab building. Its local employees currently work out of a WeWork in Central Square, where the company moved last year and has since grown to about 50 employees.

The Kendall Square space will allow Anthropic to more than double its local team, with room for 120 people, according to the report. Anthropic co-founder and President Daniela Amodei said Cambridge is a natural place to expand roots given the presence of life science researchers using Claude.

Bisnow notes that Anthropic’s deal follows other smaller AI firms expanding in the Greater Boston area. The article also points to broader AI leasing activity locally, citing CBRE data that since 2020, $578B in venture capital has gone into AI companies, with 80% of the funding directed to San Francisco.
