Apple launches foldable iPhone Duo at $1,999, after iPhone 18 skip

The Duo starts at $1,999, and Apple plans a second iPhone release date on October 23, adding a new product cycle timing that could affect technology-sector ETF holdings such as XLK.

Apple unveiled its first foldable iPhone, the Duo, at a starting price of $1,999 during CEO John Ternus’ debut product event, according to ETF Trends. The device unfolds to a 7.6-inch display and supports Split View for running two apps side by side on iPhone for the first time, the outlet said.

Apple will ship the iPhone Duo on October 23, about five weeks after the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max go on sale September 18. ETF Trends also notes that Apple skipped releasing a standard iPhone 18 this year, shifting instead to expect the lower-priced model in the next spring.

The Duo is built on the same A20 Pro chip used in the iPhone 18 Pro line and is positioned by Apple as delivering up to 35% better sustained performance than last year’s model. ETF Trends reports that analysts expect the staggered launches to help smooth Apple’s revenue throughout the year, and that the two-model approach could ease sourcing pressures tied to tight memory pricing, with CNBC and Counterpoint Research cited in the story.

Apple’s product mix can ripple beyond the company because Apple is a large holding in technology-sector funds. ETF Trends highlights the State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF, XLK, which charges a 0.08% expense ratio, holds 73 companies, showed a 29.8% year-to-date return through the period ending August 31, and had Apple among its largest positions, with Apple shares rising 8.5% within XLK’s portfolio over the three months since June 9.
