China signals it may broker Trump-Kim meeting ahead of Xi visit

The Chinese government is reportedly willing to back efforts toward renewed US-North Korea dialogue, while Kim would likely seek sanctions relief and recognition of its nuclear status.

China is reportedly prepared to play a more active role in reviving US-North Korea diplomacy, including supporting efforts that could lead to a meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, sources told the South China Morning Post.

The reported push comes just weeks before Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to travel to Washington for a bilateral summit, with Beijing signaling it wants to remain a central negotiation player on the Korean peninsula.

According to the outlet, Kim is likely to demand major concessions to return to talks, given Pyongyang’s strengthened ties with Russia and China and his disappointment from earlier interactions with Trump. One source said Kim would likely insist on sanctions relief and US recognition of North Korea’s nuclear status before agreeing to another meeting.

The report also says China would seek clarity on whether Washington has outlined concrete outcomes in advance, and that Beijing is particularly keen to broker a Trump-Kim meeting, but would push the leaders together only if its own interests are protected.
