Copper prices hit record levels as sector outlook turns longer term

A copper producer executive cited durable demand drivers, while noting potential risks tied to AI, trade policy, and geopolitical developments.

Copper prices have been trading at or near all-time highs, prompting renewed focus on the long-term case for the metal, according to MarketWatch. In an interview, a CEO at a listed copper producer said the sector’s higher-price rationale remains intact over the long run.

MarketWatch reported that the executive acknowledged a bear case for copper prices, including the possibility that the AI-driven trade could unwind.

The outlook also hinges on macro and policy factors, including whether tariffs are pursued or avoided, MarketWatch said, as well as whether conditions improve in the Persian Gulf.

Overall, MarketWatch framed the CEO’s comments as a balance of sustained long-term support for copper with downside scenarios tied to technology demand, trade restrictions, and geopolitical risk.
