Homeowners insurance rates rise 47% nationwide since 2020
Nationwide premiums climbed nearly 47% from 2020 through 2025, with no states in the latest analysis seeing declines as severe weather drove insurer re-underwriting.
Homeowners insurance rates have jumped nearly 47% nationwide from 2020 through 2025, according to LendingTree's 2026 State of Home Insurance report, with the affordability crisis spreading beyond long-strained states like Florida and California, according to Yahoo Finance. Colorado logged the steepest increase in 2025, with rates rising 18.3%, while Minnesota and Iowa followed with gains of 17.0% and 14.7%, respectively. The report found that no state included in its analysis saw rates fall during 2025. Severe weather is the main driver behind the higher premiums. Yahoo Finance cites Colorado's exposure to 22 separate billion-dollar disasters from 2020 through 2024, alongside hail, wildfires, tornadoes, and severe storms. The Insurance Information Institute says insurers have had to price risk more aggressively as costly loss events have increased since 2020, with the outlet noting that perils such as wildfire and hail had been priced conservatively when loss history appeared stable.
