Iran’s capture of US underwater drone could enable reverse engineering
The Dive-LD autonomous underwater vehicle is intended for long-range undersea missions, and the episode is framed as a technology setback for US efforts to keep uncrewed maritime systems from falling into Iranian hands.
Iran’s capture of a US military underwater drone could give Tehran an opportunity to study the technology and potentially reverse-engineer the vessel, Reuters reports, marking a setback for the Pentagon and drone maker Anduril.
The drone is described as a Dive-LD autonomous underwater vehicle designed for long-range surveillance and other undersea missions, part of a newer generation of military drones meant to operate for days with limited human involvement.
Reuters says the US military and Anduril have downplayed the significance of the drone ending up in Iranian hands, but Washington has previously treated the loss of advanced drones to Iran as a serious matter.
The report also notes that following Iran’s capture of an RQ-170 Sentinel stealth reconnaissance drone in 2011, Iran claimed it reverse-engineered the aircraft and later unveiled domestically produced models that drew heavily on its design, and that the US military more recently moved quickly to prevent Iranian forces from taking possession of uncrewed maritime technology.
