Steak 'n Shake links Lightning Bitcoin payments to 19% franchise growth

The chain said it started accepting Bitcoin over the Lightning Network in May 2025 and reported 19% same-store sales gains for franchise partners this quarter.

Steak 'n Shake said it has seen double-digit same-store sales growth since it began accepting Bitcoin payments over the Lightning Network last year, adding that the latest quarter has been especially strong for franchise partners.

In a post on its X account, the Indianapolis, Indiana-based burger franchise said it started accepting Bitcoin in May 2025, and that this quarter has delivered franchise-partners same-store sales growth of 19%.

The company previously said it would add Bitcoin to its balance sheet, and it announced in January that it added $10 million in Bitcoin to a strategic reserve.

Steak 'n Shake also attributed the shift to lower and faster payment costs, saying merchants can save roughly 50% on processing fees when customers pay with Bitcoin versus credit cards, where processors typically charge between 2.5% and 3.5% per transaction.
