Trump threatens legal action against Taiwan representative office
The threat comes ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned visit to Washington later this month and could intensify scrutiny of US-Taiwan relations.
South China Morning Post reports that US President Donald Trump has threatened to sue Taiwan’s Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office, or Tecro, as part of a broader dispute tied to a Washington think tank.
The outlet says Trump raised the issue in a social media post attacking the Centre for American Progress after it disputed his claims about how National Guard deployments affect violent crime. Trump called the think tank a “radical left scam” and said he was strongly considering including some of the think tank’s donors in the lawsuit.
According to SCMP Economy, Trump also indicated he could seek US$5 billion in damages. The report adds that Taiwan’s main opposition Kuomintang described the remarks as an unusual diplomatic warning.
The threatened lawsuit is also drawing attention because it arrives ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington later this month, according to the report.
