US sanctions target Iran’s remaining airlines, escalating pressure on Tehran
The US Treasury sanctioned 36 targets on September 8, including 27 Iranian airlines, and said the aviation sector is used to move weapons and personnel.
The United States has imposed sanctions on all of Iran’s remaining active airlines, intensifying pressure on Tehran’s aviation sector as part of a broader effort to limit Iran’s access to international trade and finance, OilPrice reports.
According to OilPrice, the US Treasury Department on September 8 sanctioned 36 targets, including 27 Iranian airlines, along with foreign companies and an individual accused of helping Iran’s sanctioned aviation networks procure aircraft, aircraft parts, and other technology.
The action follows an August 24 determination aimed at Iran’s aviation sector, and Treasury said the sector supports the Iranian government’s ability to move weapons, personnel, and illicit cargo.
OilPrice adds that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the sanctions are a warning to anyone doing business with Iran’s remaining airlines, while the State Department said the campaign is intended to shut down what Washington describes as the regime’s financial lifelines, including aviation.
