Bessent meets He Lifeng ahead of Xi state visit to continue US-China talks
The latest meeting follows eight hours of negotiations in New York, where both sides agreed to launch an AI dialogue and operationalize a bilateral trade body.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent held an unscheduled meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Washington on Wednesday, hours before Chinese President Xi Jinping was due to arrive for a state visit, according to SCMP Economy.
The talks are taking place at World Bank headquarters, after Bessent and He engaged on Sunday at JPMorgan’s offices in New York. Bessent said the two sides had “unfinished business” from Sunday, adding that both want strategic stability based on reciprocity and fairness.
SCMP Economy reported that the Sunday meeting followed eight hours of negotiations in New York last week, which ended with an agreement to launch a dialogue on artificial intelligence and to operationalize a bilateral trade body. The Sunday meeting also included US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
