China touts Xi US trip as fentanyl curbs are unveiled before summit

Beijing’s ambassador said Xi’s visit will be a second top-level exchange in just over four months, after Trump’s May state visit.

China’s ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, described President Xi Jinping’s scheduled state visit as a “historic milestone” for China US bilateral relations, with the interview published hours before Xi departed for the US.

Xie’s remarks came after Beijing unveiled new, more stringent regulations on fentanyl, which SCMP Economy framed as part of building diplomatic momentum ahead of the Xi Trump summit in Washington.

The ambassador said the relationship is expected to continue advancing through frequent and strategic communications between the two leaders on major global issues, and he characterized head of state diplomacy as a safeguard for stability amid “turbulent winds and rough seas.”

Xie also said Xi’s trip would mark the second top-level exchange in a little over four months, following Trump’s state visit in May, according to SCMP Economy.
