Global open letter urges clean, affordable electricity for everyone by 2030
The signatories say reaching the nearly 1 billion people without reliable power requires scaling clean generation, with $15 described as the cost to provide access for one person for a generation.
The Guardian Business publishes an open letter calling on global leaders to accelerate a transition to clean energy, arguing that fossil-fuel dependence is tied to both climate impacts and conflicts driven by oil.
The letter, which the outlet says is signed by figures including Bernie Sanders and Yeb Saño, urges governments, businesses, and institutions to work toward providing clean, affordable electricity to everyone, everywhere by 2030.
Organizers point to examples including California reducing natural gas use for electricity generation by half versus three years ago through solar and batteries, Pakistan installing millions of solar panels in months, and home solar kits bringing electricity to millions across sub-Saharan Africa.
The letter lays out two steps, it says, build clean power for the nearly one in 10 people without regular electricity access, and build clean power everywhere, adding that it takes $15 to give one person access to clean electricity for a generation.
