Quantum computing progress could lower the odds of a Bitcoin threat

Bitcoin Magazine points to advances in quantum error correction, moving from surface codes toward qLDPC codes, which could make future quantum systems more viable for computing.

Bitcoin Magazine discusses whether a future quantum computer could pose a practical threat to the Bitcoin network, noting that debate on the topic has continued for more than a decade.

The piece cites two major milestones that, in its view, materially improve the likelihood of viable machines being produced within the next decade or so, even if access may still be limited for those with large capital.

It highlights progress in quantum error correction. The article describes how earlier approaches like surface codes require a large overhead, up to around 1,000 physical qubits per logical qubit, because check qubits only verify nearby qubits in a grid.

Bitcoin Magazine says quantum low-density parity-check, or qLDPC, codes can remove a key scaling bottleneck by enabling check qubits to check other qubits over longer distances, potentially through communication between sections of a chip or by moving atoms in certain designs.
