Rubio defends Xi Jinping’s US visit despite deep disagreements
Rubio said it would be “irresponsible” for the world’s two largest economies to avoid high level talks even amid disputes.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the planned welcome for Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying the United States should still engage at the highest level despite deep disagreements between Washington and Beijing, according to SCMP Economy.
Rubio made the remarks to reporters at the United Nations on Wednesday, ahead of Xi’s expected arrival in Washington, and argued that avoiding talks would be irresponsible given the global importance of the relationship.
The comments came after criticism tied to the visit, including questions Rubio faced about concerns raised by Republican Senator Ro, SCMP Economy said.
