Solana begins testing upgrade aimed at near-immediate payment finality

The Alpenglow upgrade is designed to let payments be treated as effectively irreversible in about 150 milliseconds, down from 12.8 seconds.

CoinDesk reports that Solana has started testing an upgrade called Alpenglow that is intended to substantially speed up transaction finality for payments.

The upgrade would allow exchanges, bridges, and merchants to treat transfers as irreversible almost immediately after they occur, CoinDesk says.

In its current state, Solana finality is about 12.8 seconds, according to the report, and the testing targets reducing that to roughly 150 milliseconds.

The update, if rolled out, could change how payment and settlement workflows are built across Solana-linked services.
