Solana rolls Alpenglow consensus overhaul into testnet
The upgrade targets about 150-millisecond finality, down from roughly 12.8 seconds, and aims to cut the wait for irreversible transactions by about 99%.
Solana has begun rolling out its Alpenglow consensus overhaul on testnet, moving the planned change into a public testing environment. The upgrade is designed to improve block finality to about 150 milliseconds, compared with roughly 12.8 seconds under TowerBFT, Solana’s current consensus mechanism.
Alpenglow replaces the consensus layer while keeping the Solana Virtual Machine, transactions, programs, and fees unchanged. In its first phase, it introduces Votor, which replaces on-chain vote transactions with votes sent directly between validators, combined into certificates intended to finalize blocks within one or two voting rounds.
Anza, the developer behind Solana’s Agave validator software, said testnet is entering the rollout process, with deployments on devnet expected before eventual mainnet-beta. The migration requires adjustments from validators and infrastructure providers that stream blocks, track votes, or rely on Solana’s existing commitment structure.
Solana said the second planned component, Rotor, which replaces Turbine for distributing block data, is scheduled separately, leaving Votor and faster finality as the immediate focus. The consensus push arrives alongside other performance changes, including Transaction V1 that lifted maximum transaction size to 4,096 bytes from 1,232, and a broader recovery in SOL, which was around $117 after reaching almost $120, according to CryptoSlate data.
