Trump greets Xi with tarmac ceremony as China hawks warn rivalry persists
The SCMP says surveys suggest US anxiety about China has eased from a 2024 peak, even as “China hawks” argue the ceremony could downplay ongoing tensions.
Hours before President Xi Jinping’s aircraft lands at Joint Base Andrews, Washington is preparing for a highly symbolic welcome, with the US president’s counterpart set to wait on the tarmac, a scene that has become rare in recent years.
According to SCMP Economy, the Trump administration is aiming for warmth, deals, and stability with Beijing, and recent public surveys indicate American anxiety about China has eased from its 2024 peak.
Still, the outlet reports that “China hawks” have been warning that the ceremony may obscure the more familiar reality that Beijing remains a strategic rival and that the underlying issues driving the US-China contest have not disappeared.
SCMP Economy also notes that since Trump returned to the White House, that hawkish chorus has lost influence inside the administration and with the public, with Trump himself disputing their arguments and calling Xi a “great gentleman.”
