UK to create new center to detect and disrupt information warfare

The National Centre for Information Defence will bring together intelligence, law enforcement, and social media companies to address disinformation and deepfakes enabled by AI.

The UK plans to set up a National Centre for Information Defence to tackle information warfare, including disinformation and deepfakes from hostile states such as Russia, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said in remarks to the United Nations in New York, according to the Guardian Business.

The center will be tasked to “detect, attribute and disrupt” information attacks by foreign powers, and to build defensive capability by bringing together intelligence agencies, law enforcement, and social media companies.

Burnham said the effort is aimed at preventing a “distorted and untrue” narrative about the UK, including helping communities identify and combat disinformation, and he warned that AI is expected to multiply the threat.

In his speech, Burnham linked vulnerability to online influence with cost of living pressures and inequality, arguing campaigns can reach into people’s homes and stoke division and despair.
