US and China head to AI summit amid calls to slow frontier development

Executives including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI chief Sam Altman, and Elon Musk have urged “pacing” ahead of a Trump-Xi summit in Washington on Thursday.

Housing and market watchers will be looking to a US-China AI meeting in Washington after US and Chinese leaders signaled they are trying to align on “constructive strategic stability,” ahead of a highly anticipated summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington on Thursday.

According to SCMP Economy, American AI executives have recently called for “pacing” the development of frontier artificial intelligence, arguing that capabilities are advancing faster than safeguards meant to control them, with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI chief Sam Altman, and SpaceXAI founder Elon Musk all making public appeals in recent weeks.

SCMP Economy also links the renewed focus on AI safety to recent diplomacy, noting that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng met in New York City over the weekend to discuss AI safety before the leaders’ summit.
