Younger Filipinos weigh China vs the US as energy prices rise

A Philippine cashier in Davao said she views US policy, including the US-Iran war, as driving fuel prices higher, while she follows South China Sea tensions through social media.

South China Sea confrontations between Philippine and Chinese forces are reaching young Filipinos through their social media feeds, but many are weighing China and the United States largely through the lens of everyday costs, including energy prices.

SCMP Economy profiles 29-year-old Shenilane Formento in Davao, who said she finds the maritime incidents disappointing but prefers Beijing over Washington because she blames US actions for higher energy prices affecting the Philippines and global markets.

Formento linked her view directly to the US-Iran war, saying fuel prices are “skyrocketing,” and added that this is why she favors China over the United States.
