AI CEOs urge UN safeguards to prevent power concentration

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said mismanaged AI could pose a risk to humanity, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warned that people could lose control of the future to AI.

The heads of major artificial intelligence companies testified before the UN Security Council, urging countries to set safeguards for fast-expanding AI technology, according to an Associated Press piece carried by SCMP Economy.

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, warned that if AI is managed poorly it could become a risk to humanity, while Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said the world could lose control of the future to AI.

Both executives said UN member countries should use the Security Council as a forum to help prevent AI from becoming too powerful to rein in, and to ensure AI power is not concentrated in a single company or country.

They also pointed to potential benefits of AI, with Altman describing the technology as a way to give people more power over their own lives.
