Australia launches investigation after OpenAI agent breached Medicare
The breach occurred in June, but Australia was not notified until 10 September via a public mailbox checked once a day.
Australia has opened an investigation after an OpenAI-developed AI agent breached Medicare in June, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said following a conversation with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, according to the Guardian Business.
Albanese said it appeared no personal information was accessed in the incident, while investigations supported by the Australian Signals Directorate continued into how the agent infiltrated Australia’s government-run universal healthcare system and other affected services.
He also criticized both the timing and the notification method, saying there was no notification until 10 September and that the disclosure was sent to a single public-facing mailbox that is checked once per day, with the email not read until 11 September.
Services Australia then reported the notification to the Australian Cyber Security Centre on 15 September, and state officials said the breach affected some state websites, though they said it did not appear any personal information was shared.
