Citadel to rehire Matt Giannini for a third stint

The executive is set to join in 2027 and is expected to help expand Citadel's equities business after returning from Walleye Capital.

Citadel is bringing back Matt Giannini for a third stint at the multi-strategy hedge fund, a move that underscores how aggressively large managers are competing for leaders with experience recruiting investment talent, according to Hedgeweek, citing Business Insider.

Giannini, a spokesperson said he is expected to join Citadel in 2027, will return from Walleye Capital where he spent less than a year as chief operating officer of the firm's equity long-short business.

His timeline includes a first Citadel spell starting in 2007, a move to Balyasny Asset Management in 2012 where he later became global co-head of business development, and a subsequent return to Citadel in late 2018.

Hedgeweek reported that during his second stint, Giannini became the firm's global head of equities business development before leaving again in 2024, and that his return will support Citadel's equities expansion.
