Far-right activist arrested over alleged slashing of dinghy in Channel

Police said the inflatable boat was empty of migrants but had a rescue services member aboard when it was allegedly damaged.

A far-right activist previously known for leading protests against migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats was arrested after police said he slashed a dinghy in the water.

According to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, a video posted on Tuesday on social media appears to show Daniel Thomas, 37, taking a knife to an inflatable boat while shouting that it was in English territory.

Police said the boat was empty of migrants but had a rescue services member aboard at the time. They arrested a 37-year-old man on Wednesday on suspicion of criminal damage with intent to endanger life and endangering the safety of a vessel, and said he remained in custody on Thursday.

The incident follows reports that agitators against immigration have adopted a confrontational new tactic of trying to stop the boats landing on England’s shores, with clashes involving police and rescuers.
