Hedge fund redemptions rise in September but stay below last year

SS&C GlobeOp said its Forward Redemption Indicator climbed to 2.02% in September from 1.64% in August, signaling an active redemption pipeline ahead of actual redemption dates.

Investor redemption notices at hedge funds administered by SS&C GlobeOp increased in September, according to the fund administrator's Forward Redemption Indicator. The measure rose to 2.02% in September from 1.64% in August, though it remained below the 2.21% recorded in September 2025.

The Forward Redemption Indicator tracks actual redemption notifications received from investors, expressed as a percentage of assets under administration at the beginning of the month. Because notices are typically submitted 30 to 90 days ahead of the redemption date, the figure is an early read on potential changes in hedge fund allocations rather than proof of immediate capital leaving funds.

SS&C Technologies chairman and CEO Bill Stone said the September level fits seasonal patterns and indicates redemptions are comparing favorably with earlier periods despite economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and elevated market volatility. He also noted the September reading stayed well above the indicator's record low of 1.26% set in April 2026, but materially below its historical peak of 19.27% during the 2008 financial crisis.

SS&C GlobeOp also reported continued positive performance in its hedge fund benchmark, with its Hedge Fund Performance Index showing a gross flash estimate of 0.83% for the current month. It added that the index returned 8.63% for the year to date and 14.90% over the latest 12-month period, while its SS&C GlobeOp Capital Movement Index reached 133.10 in September, the highest level over the past 12 months.
